The 7th PRRS Forum was held at Silks Place Tainan this year. More than 300 people participated in the conference unprecedentedly. The opening session was opened by George Chuang, President of Agribiz, Nicole Niu, Head of Animal Health of Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health Taiwan, and Kevin Chen, Business Segment Manager, Livestock of Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health Taiwan. Thanks to many customers for their enthusiastic participation. PRRS has always been an important issue in the pig industry in Taiwan, causing huge losses to pig farms every year. Since Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health Taiwan and Agribiz jointly organized the first PRRS forum at the Shangri-La's Far Eastern Plaza Hotel in Tainan seven years ago, they have shared the latest PRRS control information in the world and how to use the PRRS vaccine correctly. The great lecturers came out in large numbers, and the participants were all engrossed! This year’s PRRS forum invited Professor Kuo Hung-Chih from the Department of Veterinary Medicine of National Chiayi University to share the status of Taiwan’s PRRS and its control strategies. Dr. Kuo first shared the case statistics of The Yunlin-Chiayi-Tainan of Animal Disease Diagnostic Center. PRRS virus is still the most diagnosed pathogen at present. Then he shared how to use vaccines to cut off the infectious chain of PRRS virus in the farm, immunize sows to prevent vertical infection of sows to newborn piglets, while piglet immunization is to prevent horizontal infection. Additionally, the domestication of gilts and the control of biosafety are important keys to reduce the breach of introducing PRRS virus.
Professor Chiu Ming-Tang, head of the Department of Veterinary Medicine, National Pingtung University of Science and Technology, gave a guide to Boehringer Ingelheim’s "Meet the Experts", on how to distinguish coughs caused by PRRS infection or other diseases on the spot, and use the COMBAT and P-TRACK app carefully developed by Boehringer Ingelheim, to learn how to utilize technology to diagnose pig diseases. Because the first-line observation and immediate response on the spot are often the best treatment for disease prevention. Next is a wonderful speech delivered by Dr. Paul Henning Rathkjen, Technical Manager of Boehringer Ingelheim Denmark. First, he introduced the PRRS Control Approach Solutions. Dr. PH mentioned continuous monitoring after the use of vaccines to understand whether there is concern about vertical infection. Then following are the old-fashioned 10 golden management rules for PRRS: Rule 1: When cross-fostering, move piglets only when necessary Rule 2: No cross-fostering later than 48 hours Rule 3: Keep piglets in the pen and avoid handling to minimize the spread of disease Rule 4: Change needles between litters Rule 5: Don’t move sick piglets Rule 6: Wean all piglets from each week’s batch at the same time, and prohibit weaned piglets in the farrowing unit Rule 7: Strict batch production (all in/ all out) Rule 8: No contact between age groups Rule 9: No contact between piglets up to 6 months of age and sows Rule 10: Always introduce incoming and home-produced gilt via quarantine with administration of PRRS MLV vaccination upon entry to the quarantine area The second foreign lecturer was Dr. Carlo U. Maala, who shared Ingelvac® PRRS MLV's Asian experience. Pig farms in South Korean have combined infections of type 1 and type 2 PRRS. In the study, the efficacy of Ingelvac® PRRS MLV in piglet immunization was evaluated in a farrow-to-finish Farms of 1700 sows co-infected with PRRSV-1 and PRRS-2 in South Korea. The results of the experiment show that the on-site viremia decreased after 100 days, the antibody also decreased, and the weight increased during weaning to the market. The conclusion is that the pig farms with type 1 and type 2 combined infections, can cut off the infectious chain and control PRRS infection effectively by mass vaccination of Ingelvac® PRRS MLV every 3 months for sows, and entirely control for the immunization of piglets. And Dr. Li Shu-Hui, who appeared on the finale, summed up the essence of the previous speakers. Dr. Li specifically mentioned the Boehringer Ingelheim 10 golden management rules for PRRS, and to test before using the vaccines.
